A Home Enveloped by Lush Greenery and Unparalleled Views, by ACDS

Aamby Valley City, located close to Lonavala in Maharashtra, is home to coveted views of the Sahyadris and provides luxury stays that make it a much-loved weekend getaway. Kiran Villa, a 26,000-square-feet private vacation home located in this picturesque resort township has been designed by Architect Nirav Shah of ACDS. The clients wanted a design that allowed them to admire the stunning scenery and also cater to the four generations of the joint family. “We had mapped four great views that the site offered and then locked them down along which we allocated the various functions,” informs Shah. The aesthetics of the villa are largely according to the Gujarati family’s roots and culture that find expression in filigree glass pergolas and murals that draw from the landscapes of Pichwai paintings. Their modern aesthetic preferences are manifested through rich, wooden textures, traditional Indian art, stunning lighting pieces and honed marble finishes. All of these elements harmoniously come together to imbue the home with an understated opulence.

Fashion Designer Nikhil Thampi’s Lonavala Villa

Fashion designer Nikhil Thampi quickly taught himself the craft of fashion design, glitz and glamour and he has climbed up the Bollywood ladder of fame in lightning speed, having dressed many leading celebrities. Twinkle Khanna, Kangana Ranaut, Sushmita Sen, Lisa Haydon, Sidharth Malhotra, Vaani Kapoor, Disha Patani, are some of the Bollywood A-listers who have worn a Nikhil Thampi. The fashion designer incorporates hardware in his ensembles, as well as quirky cutouts that shine. It seems like Thampi loves his downtime, as he escapes to his weekend home near Lonavala that he designed from scratch. He’s built a quaint cabin in the woods on a 1.5-acre plot in Amarja Hills, Lonavala—a 3-hour drive from Mumbai. Like other parts of Lonavala, this part of Maharashtra is picturesque too, especially since the plot of land faces the glorious Pavana (Pawna) Dam. His weekend home doesn’t occupy the full plot, instead, it is spread across a comfortable 3,500-square-foot area, ensuring it is a cosy, yet sizeable weekend home. Fondly referred to as the “Log House”, this weekend home was inspired by German homes—and the logs were, indeed, flown from Germany. Moreover, the fashion designer bought in French engineers to assemble these logs and form the layout of the home. Evidently, he has put in a lot of thought for this home. “My dad and I have always been fans of the wooden chalet concept, and we have had it in mind since before the conception of the space”, he reveals.

A Talegaon Apartment That Explores the Beauty of  Wood and Concrete, by Amoeba Design

Designing a home can be an intense process, with a lot of back and forth between clients and designers, on account of differing opinions. However, in this case both the client and the designers were in consensus, right from the beginning. Architects Pashmin Shah and Satyajeet Patwardhan of Amoeba Design, have always been deeply inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi. “Amoeba Design is a young and dynamic firm inspired by the concept of Wabi-sabi, an intuitive way of living that encourages us to celebrate the beauty of a naturally imperfect world and we aim to manifest this approach in all our projects,” say Shah and Patwardhan. The brief they received from the client was in line with this philosophy and the firm set about conceptualising the interiors of this 1,721-square-feet apartment, located in Talegaon, Maharashtra. Owned by a famous cinematographer, the 4BHK apartment has been designed for his parents to stay in and for him and his wife to visit over the weekends. A number of interior walls were removed to open up the house to this scenery. The entire north side opens up to the landscape outside and openings were added and made bigger to let the landscape seep in. The balcony doors thus make the landscape an ever changing artwork for the space,” say the duo.
